Transcript
- Hepatitis B is caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection
- HBV is most commonly transmitted from infected mother to baby during delivery
- and from fathers during early childhood
- HBV can be transmitted through contact with blood or body fluids, or sexual contact
- The risk of developing chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is related to the age of HBV infection
- If babies get infected under the age of two years, 90% of them will develop CHB
- For infection beyond the age of six, the risk of developing CHB decreases significantly
- If people with CHB do not receive follow-up and treatment
- the risk of developing liver cancer or cirrhosis would be 40% for male and 15% for female
- About 80% of liver cancer cases in Hong Kong are caused by HBV infection
- People with CHB should encourage family members to get tested for hepatitis B
- including parents, siblings, offspring and sexual partners
- If they were found to be infected with HBV
- they should seek medical consultation to determine whether antiviral medication is needed
- Antiviral medication is effective in inhibiting HBV replication and reducing the risk of liver cancer
- Treatment may also improve the liver fibrosis of cirrhotic patients
- Remember to follow doctor’s instructions to receive treatment and follow-up
- especially ultrasound examination every six months
