- Yesterday, he was told that his brother was infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV)
- He recalls that his mother died of liver cancer caused by hepatitis B
- He is wondering if he should get tested for HBV
- so he decides to consult a doctor
- What is hepatitis B ? How is it spread ?
- The doctor told Ryan,
- Hepatitis B is a liver disease caused by HBV
- A few people infected with HBV may develop symptoms
- Some people fail to clear the virus and develop chronic hepatitis B infection
- and even cirrhosis and liver cancer
- Mothers with hepatitis B can transmit
- HBV to their babies during delivery
- HBV can also be transmitted through contact with blood or body fluids, or sexual contact
- However, HBV is not transmitted through breastfeeding or social contact, such as dining together or shaking hands
- How to diagnose and treat HBV infection?
- Blood test is required to diagnose hepatitis B
- HBV-infected people’s family members
- and their sexual partners are at higher risk of HBV infection
- Together with other high-risk groups, such as people who inject drugs, HIV-positive people and men who have sex with men
