- In 2019, about 4% of pregnant women had hepatitis B in Hong Kong
- I am among the 4% getting infected
- The doctor said that hepatitis B virus (HBV) could be transmitted from mother to baby
- In fact, my mother also has hepatitis B. Currently there is no available medication for a cure
- Without any preventive measures, there is high chance for me to transmit the virus to my baby
- If a baby has chronic hepatitis B, he may even develop cirrhosis and liver cancer in later life!
- When the doctor mentioned about this, I was very worried
- I worried that HBV would be transmitted to my baby
- Fortunately the doctor told me about the actions for protecting baby
- During my antenatal blood testing, the HBV viral load in blood was found to be high
- The doctor advised me to take antiviral medication starting from the third trimester
- For the sake of baby’s health, I will take the medication daily as prescribed
- which can significantly reduce the transmission risk of hepatitis B
- Moreover, baby has to receive hepatitis B immunoglobulin within 24 hours after birth
- and the 3-dose course of hepatitis B vaccination, just like other babies born in Hong Kong
- I will take my baby for hepatitis B vaccination as scheduled to protect him from HBV infection
