Introduction of Hong Kong Viral Hepatitis Action Plan 2020-2024

Transcript

  • Viral hepatitis poses a major public health threat in Hong Kong.
  • There are around 540 000 people with hepatitis B and 22 000 people with hepatitis C.
  • Among around 1500 liver cancer deaths each year, most are related to hepatitis B and C.
  • Indeed, there is safe and effective vaccine to prevent hepatitis B.
  • Chronic hepatitis B can also be managed through regular monitoring of liver condition and use of antivirals.
  • Hepatitis C can even be cured by treatment.
  • Therefore, it is possible to eliminate chronic viral hepatitis!
  • Hong Kong Viral Hepatitis Action Plan 2020-2024 is a milestone towards significantly reducing the burden of chronic hepatitis B and C.
  • The Action Plan adopts four strategic axes: awareness, surveillance, prevention and treatment.
  • Priority actions in each axis have been developed.
  • The Government will address the needs of different target groups to enhance the public awareness and knowledge of hepatitis B and C.
  • The current surveillance on viral hepatitis will be continued and a set of 12 local indicators are adopted to monitor and evaluate the strategies of hepatitis elimination.
  • The major route of transmission of hepatitis B is mother-to-child transmission.
  • To realise a “Hepatitis B free generation” in Hong Kong, in addition to universal screening of pregnant women for hepatitis B and neonatal vaccination, there is a new initiative of offering antivirals for hepatitis B to pregnant women of high viral load in order to further reduce the transmission risk.
  • Post-vaccination serologic testing will be arranged for babies born to mothers with hepatitis B to identify those without adequate immune response and provide them with a second series of vaccination.
  • Treatment capacity for hepatitis B will be enhanced and access to direct-acting antivirals will be expanded to all patients with hepatitis C.
  • Through the implementation of various actions in the Action Plan, we aim to achieve the targets in Hong Kong by 2030:

- 90% infected people diagnosed
- 80% eligible patients treated
- 90% reduction in number of new cases of chronic hepatitis B and C
- 65% reduction in number of deaths from hepatitis B and C

  • with the ultimate vision to render Hong Kong free of chronic viral hepatitis
